Hacked sites attacked thousands of iPhones every week for years using undiscovered exploits

TwitterFacebook

In what’s being touted as potentially one of the biggest attacks on iPhone users ever, Google has revealed that a collection of websites were hacked to deliver malware onto iPhones, with the iOS vulnerabilities involved going unchecked and undiscovered for years — as well as subsequent attacks.

The hacks installed zero-interaction malware into unnamed sites that received thousands of visitors every week. Simply visiting the sites, without clicking or scrolling at all, could deliver a monitoring implant onto users’ iPhones.

Google demonstrated that the implant could “steal private data like iMessages, photos and GPS location in real-time”; it also had access to users’ keychains and password data, as well as database files containing plaintext of messages sent and received in messaging apps such as Google Hangouts, and even specifically end-to-end encrypted apps including WhatsApp, iMessage, and Telegram. YouTube will stop displaying exact follower counts in September

dims?crop=5472%2C3422%2C0%2C0&quality=85In an attempt to take the pressure off of creators, YouTube is changing the way it displays how many followers an account has. Throughout September, the platform is rolling out abbreviated public subscriber counts. For example, if a creator has 1,234…

How Do I Stream My Android Phone to an Older TV?

pjarzozn2qwkvitphrmw.jpg

You should never feel limited to the small screen on the tiny phone in your pocket—or gargantuan phone, depending on your preference for “plus” devices. It’s pretty easy to push whatever you’re looking at on your phone at to a larger screen, like your living-room television. At least, it should be.

How to Copy and Paste on a Chromebook

Chromebook copy and paste logo

Should you need to copy text from one document into another, don’t worry. Copying and pasting on a Chromebook works identically to how it works on any other operating system, and you can do it in a couple of ways.

How to Copy Text

The first thing you want to do is open up a document or webpage and highlight the word(s) or line(s) you want to copy. Right-click the selection—either with two fingers on a trackpad, with a mouse, or by pressing Alt while clicking—and then click “Copy.”

Highlight some text, right-click it, and then click "Copy."

Alternatively, instead of using the right-click context menu, you can press Ctrl+C to copy the highlighted text to the clipboard.

Tip: If you want to altogether remove text from a document while copying it to the clipboard, click “Cut” from the context menu or press Ctrl+X instead.

How to Paste Text

Now that you have text copied to the clipboard, open up a document, word processor, or text box (such as Chrome’s address bar) to paste it into place. Click the mouse cursor where you want to paste the text, right-click, and then select “Paste” from the context menu that appears.

Go to the document you want to paste the text, right-click, and then click "Paste."

How to Install a Dictionary for Use in Linux Terminal

terminal-dictionary-featured-image.jpegLearning new words can be a pain when you’re pressed for time and the pages of a dictionary can only be flipped so fast. Thankfully, the Internet has placed a lot of powerful tools at your fingertips to help streamline such processes. After all, Google gives you word definitions right in its search results these days. However, even Google can’t help you when you’re stuck writing offline. A locally stored dictionary utility can really come in handy when no other dictionary is available (or even when there is!), and options abound in the world of Linux software. Among these, there is one that runs quite… Read more

Malware Distributors Create Fake Site of Popular VPN

Nord-Scam-Featured.jpgScammers these days know that the traditional clickbait and “Nigerian prince” scams don’t work as well as they used to. As people get wiser to scams, it’s become harder for hackers to sneak their attacks through their sense of security. As such, attacks have become more covert. Instead of directly asking the user to download a file or click a link, they attempt to hide the infection as much as possible for a higher success rate. One way to do this is to make a direct copy of a popular website and have everything run “as normal,” albeit with some hidden malware lurking within. Related:… Read more

How to Turn Off FaceTime on Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac

FaceTime is automatically activated when you set up your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If you don’t plan on using this feature, or if you don’t want your contacts to get in touch using FaceTime, you can simply turn it off.

Why Should You Turn Off FaceTime?

You might want to turn off or restrict FaceTime for privacy or security reasons. In early 2019, a huge Group FaceTime bug was discovered that let a caller listen in on your iPhone or iPad even before you picked up the call. That bug has now been fixed.

But if you’re still not sure about the security of your account, you can disable FaceTime altogether. Once you do this, you won’t be able to make or receive FaceTime calls.

How to Turn Off FaceTime on iPhone and iPad

One thing to be aware of is when you disable FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad, you will stop receiving notifications for video calls. But to the caller, it will look like you’re not answering.

To disable the feature, open your Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and find the “FaceTime” section.

Select the FaceTime option from the Settings screen

On this screen, you’ll see all the details regarding your FaceTime account. If you want, you can disable one or multiple phone numbers or addresses where you can be reached. While you can disable email addresses associated with your account, you can’t disable your phone number.
