Move over mad men: social media influencers are the new kids on the block

Brands have used ambassadors for as long as there have been brands. Even in the 1700s the royal family was talking up Josiah Wedgwood’s pottery, and today Wedgwood is a household name. Branding works, but things are starting to shift. People no longer want to hear from marketing campaigns and paid celebrities. People want to hear from regular people just like them, and this has given rise to the era of the social media influencer. Social Media Is Changing The Marketing Game When social media was brand new, many brands treated it simply as free advertising. In reality there’s nothing…This story continues at The Next Web by George Beall #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news

Apple’s iPhone 8 event is officially happening on September 12

Apple has sent out invites for its next launch event taking place on September 12 – just as the rumors suggested. Apple is expected to launch three iPhones: the iPhone 8 with its nearly bezel-freedesign, as well as two devices that follow the mold of the iPhone 7. All devices are expected to feature glass backs instead of the recent metal in order to enable wireless charging. The company will also likely announce an official release date for the HomePod speaker it first unveiled earlier this year. At this point it seems like we know pretty much everything coming to…This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: iPhone,Apple by Napier Lopez #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news

FCC net neutrality hearing delayed after tech CEOs are no shows

Republicans are hitting the brakes on net neutrality discussions planned for September 7th, citing the need for further input from tech companies and internet service providers (ISPs). The US House Energy and Commerce Committee had requested the CEOs of numerous technology companies — including Facebook and Google – attend the special hearing to determine the future of net neutrality, but none were willing to publicly commit to attending. The internet remains free and open for at least another week. Obama-era rules currently prevent ISPs from throttling content in order to promote “fast-lane” services, instead forcing them to act like utility…This story continues at The Next Web by Tristan Greene #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news

WhatsApp is down in multiple countries around the world

WhatsApp is down, according to DownDetector and a flood of complaints on social media. The complaints appear to be coming from Europe, Asia, and South America, with scattered complaints from other regions. I know I can’t use it here in Texas, and my colleagues in Amsterdam report it’s down for them as well. In my case, Unlike most other social media sites, you can’t exactly check WhatsApp’s Twitter for updates, considering the last time the profile was updated was in late 2016. But that hasn’t stopped hundreds of people flooding Twitter with complaints under the hashtag “Whatsappdown.” This story is…This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: WhatsApp by Rachel Kaser #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news

Why Today’s Freelance Developers Have Gig Economy On Their Side

The U.S. economy is estimated to grow at between 2.5 to 3 percent this year, and it’s positively affecting the gig economy and its nearly 54 million freelancers who are telecommuting from home and co-working spaces across the country. The impact is huge because by 2020, at least 40 percent of American laborers will be gig workers, according to a 2010 study by Intuit. The transition from W-2 to 1099 may seem like a blow to those who’ve spent a lifetime working as a salaried employee, but it’s actually creating business opportunities for top professionals, especially for those in the…This story continues at The Next Web by Andrei Tiburca #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news

Pokémon Go introduces three new Johto legendary pokemon

Legendary pokémon are one of the ways Niantic is reviving Pokémon Go, whose popularity has waned significantly since it came out last year. Not only are they ultra-rare, but they’re often seriously difficult to capture, bringing an element of challenge into the game. Starting from today, there are three new legendary pokemon to capture, all from the Johto region depicted in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Raitou is an electric-type pokémon that’s currently hanging out in the Americas. Players in Europe and Africa, trainers will be able to capture the fire-type Entei, while Suicune is currently inhabiting the Asia-Pacific region.…This story continues at The Next Web by Matthew Hughes #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news

Stop trying to kill the headphone jack

Over a year ago, I wrote about how phone makers were starting to do away with headphone jacks. I’ve seen this unfortunate trend – which I hoped would just be a passing fad – continue to plague devices well into 2017, and it looks like we’re still in danger of losing one of the most essential features our phones have to offer today. We’ve tested a wide range of phones over the past year, and found that a number of premium handsets like the the iPhone 7, the Essential Phone and Xiaomi’s Mi 6 have nixed the jack. Others, like…This story continues at The Next Web by Abhimanyu Ghoshal #TheNextWeb #Internet #tech #news
