Apple’s promise to stop mining for metals is great news for the developing world


As the world’s biggest consumer electronics company, Apple has an incredible environmental burden on its shoulders. Its customers have an insatiable appetite for MacBooks and iPhones. To build them, Apple has to dig up a lot of shit from the ground, often from places where environmental and labor regulations are lacking – or simply aren’t enforced. Recognizing this responsibility, Apple has announced that it’s working on a “closed-loop supply chain.” What this means in practice is that it intends to rely entirely on recycled materials, and cease mining for rare earth minerals and metals.
