Jeff Bezos says he’s not scared of Donald Trump’s threats

The Washington Post publisher says Katharine Graham is his role model.

When asked how he would respond to threats from Donald Trump, Jeff Bezos invoked the steeliness of the late Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham in the heat of its coverage of the Watergate scandal.

Bezos, who has succeeded the Graham family as the newspaper’s owner, said Trump should expect — and welcome — press scrutiny as he seeks the White House. The Seattle billionaire says he’s won’t cave to pressure from the Republican party’s presumptive presidential nominee, who has repeatedly criticized the Washington Post’s coverage of his candidacy.

“The only thing I would say, with Katie Graham as my role model, is I’m very glad to have any of my body parts go through a big fat wringer, if need be,” Bezos said in remarks Tuesday on the opening day of the Code Conference at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

That’s a reference to one of the most famous threats in American journalism. Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, warned reporter Carl Bernstein that his reporting of the growing Watergate scandal would have consequences: “Katie Graham’s gonna get her tit caught in a big fat wringer if that’s published.”

Bezos says that Trump’s press-bashing could cast a pall on free speech.

“It’s just a fact that we live in a world where half the population on this planet, if you criticize your leader, you could go to jail or worse,” Bezos said. “And we live in this amazing democracy, with amazing freedom of speech, and a presidential candidate should embrace that.”

Here’s why Amazon isn’t selling Apple TV and Google Chromecast streaming products

Jeff Bezos said he wanted “acceptable business terms.”

Back in October, Amazon made a bold move. It booted two products — the Apple TV and Google Chromecast streaming devices — that compete with Amazon’s streaming device from its online store.

Asked why, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos wouldn’t answer directly. “Private business discussions should stay private,” he said at the Code Conference on Tuesday evening.

But he offered a hint, suggesting that Google and Apple were demanding terms that the e-retail giant refused to swallow.

“[W]hen we sell those devices, we want our player — our Prime Video player — to be on the device, and we want it to be on the device with acceptable business terms,” he said. “You can always get the player on the device. The question is, can you get it on there with acceptable business terms?”

Bezos claimed he didn’t know whether Amazon sells the Apple TV streaming device. It doesn’t.

Jeff Bezos insists Amazon isn’t trying to kill UPS

But maybe it’s a little bit about negotiating lower shipping prices.

Amazon is taking more control over how a package lands on your doorstep, but the company isn’t trying to destroy UPS, CEO Jeff Bezos said at the Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., on Tuesday evening.

Industry experts have reason to be suspicious. The e-commerce giant has recently starting leasing airplanes and buying up truck trailers. The goal, however, is to simply supplement the delivery capabilities of U.S. Postal Service and UPS, but do so “heavily,” according to Bezos.

“We’re growing our business” with the USPS and UPS, he said in an onstage interview with Walt Mossberg.

Bezos did, however, hint at another motivation: Getting better terms on delivery contracts with companies like UPS.

“Better prices on transportation would be acceptable to us,” he deadpanned.

Jeff Bezos on Gawker vs. Peter Thiel: ‘Develop a thick skin.’

“Seek revenge and you should dig two graves — one for yourself.”

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos controls one of the world’s biggest companies, but he also owns the Washington Post, one of the country’s most important papers, so his take on the battle between Gawker and venture capitalist Peter Thiel is very relevant.

When Recode founding editor Walt Mossberg asked Bezos on Tuesday at the Code Conference if someone like Thiel should be allowed to fund a lawsuit whose real aim is to put a publication out of business, Bezos responded succinctly: “I don’t.”

He didn’t debate the specific case but said such actions didn’t benefit anybody: “What’s that saying? ‘Seek revenge and you should dig two graves — one for yourself.’ You have to ask yourself how you want to spend your time.”

Bezos then offered some advice.

“The best defense against speech that you don’t like about yourself as a public figure is to develop a thick skin,” he said. “You can’t stop it.”

The billionaire himself has been a frequent target of critics, attacked for creating a punishing work environment, or killing independent bookstores, or for his many personal exploits like building a 10,000 year clock.

“If you’re doing anything interesting in the world, you’re going to have critics,” he said. “If you can’t tolerate critics, don’t do anything new or interesting.”

Later, Bezos directly addressed the larger issue of free speech and the underlying fear behind a lot of these moves.

“This country has the best free speech protections in the world because of the Constitution but also because of our cultural norms,” he said. “You don’t want to create any climate of fear when it comes to free speech norms. Beautiful speech doesn’t need protection; ugly speech does. If you step back and think about what a great society we have, part of it is we have these cultural norms that allow people to say these ugly things. You should let them say it.”

Jeff Bezos: Amazon Prime Video doesn’t compete with Netflix because viewers will just pick both

And why Golden Globes help sell shoes.

Amazon Prime Video, the e-retailers subscription media service, isn’t a rival to Netflix, the far bigger video subscription media service.

Or so said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Why? Because consumers will pay for each of them.

“We don’t compete with Netflix,” Bezos said on day one of the Code Conference. “I think people are going to subscribe to both.”

The Amazon chief also noted his company can trim costs for Prime Video, which includes a growing catalogue of originally produced shows, because it’s tied to the Prime retail service.

“From a business POV for us, we get to monetize that content in an unusual way,” he said. “When we win a Golden Globe, it helps us sell more shoes in a very direct way.”

It’s rated for use with 2A wall chargers, meaning you should be able to rapidly charge your 5X in less time with the right charger. It’s 6.6 feet long, which is double the length of the cable that ships with the Nexus, so you aren’t tethered so close to the wall every time you plug in.

This simple adapter can be placed on the end of any MicroUSB cable to make it compatible with a USB-C port. Anker PowerCore+

If you find your Nexus 5X is always dying on you when you aren’t around outlets of any kind, you may want to consider getting a Anker PowerCore+ power bank.

With a huge capacity of 20100 mAh, the Anker PowerCore+ can fully charge your Nexus 5X seven times and still have some juice left. It has two USB-A ports and a USB-C port allowing you to charge three devices at once, meaning all your favorite electronics will always be charged and ready to go.

While this is a great power bank, the cord that it comes with is not as high quality. We recommend using a better cable to ensure your devices are properly charged and protected from damage. The Cambond cable we mentioned earlier in this list would be a perfect choice.

UE Roll/UE Roll 2

The Ultimate Ears Roll is a mini Bluetooth speaker you can take with you wherever you go. It has a fantastic water-resistance rating, meaning you don’t have to sing alone in the shower anymore. Plus, it also comes with a floating life preserver, meaning you can bring this speaker to a pool party and have it float along the surface.

UE has released the Roll 2, which includes all the features of the older model along with a few key improvements. The Roll 2 has better sound — both in volume and tone — while also increasing the Bluetooth range to 100 feet.

The Roll 2 costs about $99; however, you can find the original Roll on sale, and it could be worth keeping an eye on the price as time goes on.

To some people, the value of the upgraded UE Roll 2 is offset by the potential savings of the original Roll. We have links to both versions below, so you can decide between the new and the old.

Jeff Bezos says he’s put more than 1,000 people on Amazon Echo and Alexa

“It’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is very bullish on his company’s artificial intelligence push. So bullish, in fact, that Amazon has invested four years of research into its key project in AI — and stacked that project with a sizable staff.

Bezos said at the Code Conference that the team on Alexa, Amazon’s smart voice-assistant software, and Echo, its flagship device, is now more than 1,000 employees. It appears to be the first time he’s publicly stated the staff size on the project.

“We’ve been working behind the scenes for the last four years,” he said about Echo and Alexa. “It’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

Other tech giants are moving into the space. Google recently previewed its coming Echo rival. Apple reportedly has one in the works.

Bezos dodged direct questions about competitors. He said voice interfaces won’t replace phones altogether, but admitted that this field of AI is only getting bigger — and noted one of Amazon’s edges over the competition.

“There will be huge advances,” he said. “Bigger companies like Amazon have an advantage because you need a lot of data to do extraordinary things.”

The Gates Foundation looks to stop Zika by giving mosquitos a sexually transmitted disease

The approach releases bugs with a bacteria that would render them and their offspring unable to transmit disease.

Ordinarily the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is in the business of stopping diseases rather than spreading them.

When it comes to mosquitoes, though, the foundation is funding an approach that aims to spread a disease among mosquitoes that would prevent those bugs from spreading Zika and other diseases.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation CEO Susan Desmond-Hellmann showed off a kit at Code Conference on Tuesday that looks like a Chinese food take-out box that contains female mosquito eggs that have been infected with a bacteria. When these insects are born, they will produce offspring that is unable to transmit a variety of diseases, including Zika.

Part of the reason the foundation is focused on this approach is that Zika itself wasn’t on anyone’s radar as far as serious disease threats. Past outbreaks caused only flu-like symptoms and not the birth defects and other serious issues that the current Zika outbreak is causing.

“Zika wasn’t on anyone’s list,” Desmond-Hellman said.

By contrast, Ebola was seen as a potential bioterrorism risk so the global health community was at least a “tiny bit” prepared for the 2014 outbreak. Even Ebola had in the past been limited to just 2,000 cases.

The Gates Foundation has been funding the Australian researchers behind the STD approach for more than eight years, originally to halt the threat of Dengue fever, though the same approach should also help fight the spread of Zika, as well as Chikungunya, another serious mosquito-borne disease.
