Grand opening dates set for Microsoft flagship stores in New York City and Sydney

It’s an exciting time for Microsoft! Our stores are no exception, as we near the opening of our first-ever flagship store in New York City, followed by our first international flagship location in Sydney.

Today, we get one step closer to expanding our direct, face-to-face connection with Microsoft fans and are happy to share grand opening dates for both Microsoft flagship stores. Microsoft on Fifth Ave. and 53rd St. will open on Monday, Oct. 26, at noon ET and Microsoft at Westfield Sydney on Pitt Street Mall will open on Thursday, Nov. 12, at noon AET.

These flagship stores have been in the making for six years. When we architected our retail plans, we committed to providing exceptional choice, value and service, and making a positive impact on the communities in which we operate. These flagship stores will deliver on these commitments, offering premier shopping destinations.

During the past several months, both flagship store sites have transformed into cutting-edge spaces that represent the best of Microsoft – we can’t wait to open our doors to those who work, live, visit and shop in these areas. Our largest stores to-date, the New York City and Sydney flagships will include elements that our customers have grown to know and love such as technology you can try from Microsoft and our partners, the Answer Desk – a one-stop shop for technical questions, troubleshooting and repairs regardless of device or where it was purchased, the Community Theater – a space where customers can learn how to use Microsoft’s latest and most popular products in their everyday work and lives, and immersive video walls throughout. These stores are being built for you.

In New York City, since announcing our first flagship store, we’ve made significant progress on construction at 677 Fifth Ave. We are eager to open our doors to those in Manhattan. The five-floor, 22,269 square foot location will be a premier venue to learn about, experience and shop for the products and services from Microsoft and our partners. Our store associate team comes from New York City’s distinct and diverse five boroughs as well as surrounding areas, and speak more than 19 languages.

In Sydney, as Pip Marlow, managing director of Microsoft Australia, shared, we are excited to launch our second flagship store. Located at Westfield Sydney on Pitt Street Mall at 188 Pitt St., the flagship will be more than 6,000 square feet/500 square meters and will span two floors. The store includes retail sales space as well as an interactive area to serve local customers and business, with staff originating from more than 11 countries and speaking more than 21 languages.

We are going to celebrate the New York and Sydney communities in a big way. For starters, we will donate more than $5 million in software and technology grants to select local organizations, as part of our company mission to help people achieve more in their lives. Our grand opening festivities in each city will recognize the great work done by these organizations and we will share more details on our community celebrations soon.

Our team is hard at work to ensure we provide outstanding service to everyone who enters these stores. We are thankful for the support of the people of New York City and Sydney, who have been working with and welcoming us into these communities.

This continues to be an exciting time for our retail business, but more importantly, for the communities and our customers. We hope you’ll join us for our grand opening events.

Microsoft acquires Adxstudio Inc., Web portal and application lifecycle management solutions provider

Organizations today are looking for new and different ways to better connect, support and engage with their customers. People increasingly rely on channels like Web portals to make sure their voice is heard – in fact this year, Forrester research uncovered that for the first time, Web self-service is now the most popular channel customers use to find help. Microsoft is committed to delivering intelligent customer engagement solutions to empower people and organizations to use these new channels to more effectively connect with their customers online.

Today we took another step toward fulfilling this commitment. I’m pleased to announce that Microsoft has reached a definitive agreement to acquire key product and technology assets of Adxstudio Inc., a provider of Web portals, online engagement solutions and application lifecycle management solutions for Microsoft Dynamics CRM. With this acquisition of our long-time partner, our customers will immediately be able to take advantage of new and exciting ways to engage with customers online.

Packed with compelling features that extend Dynamics CRM to the Web, Adxstudio Web portals are built natively on Dynamics CRM, allowing our customers to easily connect and extend their key sales and customer services business processes online. These portals work with the CRM application easily and naturally for both online and on-premises customers, who can take advantage of this offering right away. Adxstudio portals can also be used along with our Parature Service thanks to native integration with Parature’s rich knowledge management solutions.

This acquisition also delivers pre-built engagement solutions including partner relationship management for organizations who sell through partner channels; technical support solutions for high tech and software development organizations; and online citizen engagement for public sector organizations. Each of these solutions will be available for all Microsoft Dynamics CRM customers and can be used both on-premises and in the cloud.

Finally, this acquisition will empower our own customers as well as our strong partner ecosystem as it will accelerate our efforts to enable customers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to build their own CRM Web engagement solutions on Microsoft technologies. These Adxstudio capabilities enable any business process to become Web-facing.

Numbers help sum up the big picture in Microsoft’s story

We often tell stories with words, trying to choose just the right ones to describe what we’re doing or how we’re doing it. But sometimes, it’s numbers that can give us a clearer picture.

Today we’re rolling out our new Microsoft by the Numbers site to highlight some cool facts that numbers show best. We’ve tallied some of the ways Microsoft is helping people all over the planet achieve more each day — and we’re keeping tabs on some less momentous stuff, too. Like lunch. More on that in a bit.

twitterFirst, did you know Skype Translator can translate your voice calls in six different languages and your instant messages in 50 of them? That means people around the globe can not only connect but truly communicate, hopping over language barriers of the past to talk to each other in real time.

And did you know more than 1.5 million young people from more than 190 countries have competed in Microsoft’s Imagine Cup?

That’s a huge number of tech-minded kids and young adults who’ve gotten to learn from Microsoft experts and vie for cash prizes as they work to turn creative ideas into the next big thing.

How about the fact that five Microsoft researchers have won the A.M. Turing Award, a.k.a. the “Nobel Prize of computing?” twitterThat number may just show what we already know: Microsoft Research scientists and engineers are top-notch in making product advances as well as helping solve global challenges.

5 partnership principles for a new Microsoft

Since joining Microsoft a year ago to lead business development, I often get asked how I think about partnerships. To me, partnerships are a path to innovation. By coming together with others, we’re able to unlock new opportunities, chart new territories and reach people in new ways. Office 2016, released this week, is a great example of partners like Salesforce, Dropbox and Uber bringing so much innovation to the Office platform.

When you work with competitors, as we often do, it’s easy to think that partnerships are about competing for value. They are not. Partnerships are about creating mutual value. Competition is not a barrier to partnership. Even with companies that compete, if you open your eyes and mind to the potential, you can often find rich areas of collaboration.

Every relationship is different, but my approach to partnerships begins with five principles.

1. Respect

Partnerships are explorations. I want to be open to what synergies might exist and how we find the best ways to collaborate. Openness begins with respect – respect for the people at the table and the experiences they bring, respect for the other company and its mission. I don’t bring baggage into the room with me, and I don’t let the past dictate the future. I recently had the chance to sit down with Re/code’s Kara Swisher and share some of those stories.

2. Listen

Listening isn’t just about hearing words, it’s about understanding the other party’s intent and showing respect even if we don’t always agree. To me, this is a fundamental principle of good leadership. Plus, it’s just hard to build a relationship with a bad listener.

3. Say what you mean and mean what you say

Honesty and transparency are keys to any successful relationship. Over the years, I found that it’s the best way to get things done and have all parties feel terrific about the outcome. In today’s world, innovation is continuous and rapid and no one has time to waste on unnecessary cycles. Being straightforward in a relationship is the best way to achieve a mutually agreeable outcome in the fastest time possible.

4. Stay focused

In many partnerships, there are endless opportunities to collaborate and I want to uncover all of them. However, I think it’s important to always start with one or two areas of focus. Once you’ve proven you can work together successfully, then tackle the next ideas and challenges.

5. Don’t be afraid to take a pause or hit reset

Even when both parties have nothing but the best intentions, things can sometimes go sideways and may even come to a standstill. So it’s important that when a relationship becomes strained, that you take a moment to pause, listen to what the other party has to say and if necessary, hit the reset button. I’ve been involved in several negotiations that came to a standstill, but things got back on track. Sometimes, it’s critical to look at an existing relationship with a fresh set of eyes. At the same time, what didn’t work at one time, might work in the future. Technology changes. The business environment changes. People change. Wherever we are in a process, we want to maintain that sense of openness.

As a new Microsoft, we’re taking a fresh approach to business development. I’m not interested in playing hardball. I’m interested in building relationships. I’m incredibly enthused by the work we’re already doing with our partners, and I look forward to the innovation that we will collectively bring to the world in the months and years ahead.

Office 2016 releases worldwide, Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Microsoft– Weekend Reading: Sept. 25 edition

Welcome back to another edition of Weekend Reading! This week, we saw the global launch of Office 2016, a tour of the Microsoft campus by Chinese President Xi Jinping and how Microsoft Showcase Schools create innovative learning environments.

On Tuesday, Office 2016 arrived, marking a milestone in delivering new value for Office 365 subscribers with a focus on teamwork. It has lightning-fast search for your inbox and Office 365 Groups for seamless collaboration. With Office 365 Groups, you can create public or private teams with a shared inbox, calendar, notebook and cloud storage. The pairing of Office 365 and Windows 10 provides a complete solution for getting things done, including Windows Hello’s password-free login. The new Office has security features important for businesses and is a new model for delivery, with more frequent updates, new features and improvements for subscribers. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella writes, “How people work has changed dramatically. But one constant is that everyone wants to get more out of every moment of their life — after all, our time is the scarcest commodity. That’s why Microsoft has set a bold ambition to reinvent productivity and business process in this mobile-first, cloud-first world.”

On Wednesday, Microsoft hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping, First Lady Peng Liyuan and a high-level Chinese delegation at its Redmond campus, where the company highlighted new technology and the role technology can play in advancing health, education and business. During his tour, Xi met with senior executives and board members, watched technology demos and reviewed innovative new devices. Earlier in the day, Xi met with CEOs of technology companies who attended a meeting of the U.S.-China Internet Industry Forum. He also had a private meeting with Bill and Melinda Gates. Microsoft also announced three agreements to advance availability of the company’s products and services in China. When added to previous announcements, Microsoft finalized seven new agreements with Chinese companies and government institutions this week.

Educators can submit their schools as candidates for the Microsoft Showcase Schools program until Oct. 30. If chosen, they’ll join 150 Microsoft Showcase Schools around the world. These schools use technology to ensure 21st century skills are integrated into most activities, creating innovative learning environments enabled by technology.

Parkour and fantasy role playing combine for non-stop action in the App of the Week, “Running Shadow.” Fans of Lana Del Rey can also find her latest album, “Honeymoon,” in the Windows Store. “The Last Door: Collector’s Edition” is low-res with 8-bit graphics, but high on suspense through an otherworldly mystery set in Victorian England and inspired by horror master H.P. Lovecraft.
